Frequently Asked Questions
Here you can find answers to some common dental-related questions.
How often should I see a dentist?
The answer to this question will vary depending on a patient’s individual needs, but as a general rule, it’s recommended that adults see a dentist for a check-up and cleaning every six months. If you have specific oral health concerns or have been diagnosed with gum disease, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits. So, the bottom line is, check with your dentist to find out how often you should schedule an appointment.
How can I choose the right toothbrush?
There are a few things to bear in mind when choosing a toothbrush. First, make sure to choose one with soft bristles, as hard bristles can damage your gums and enamel. Secondly, consider the size and shape of the brush head to ensure it’s comfortable and easy to use.
Thirdly, look for a brush that has been approved by the British Dental Association (BDA). This ensures the brush meets certain quality standards. Lastly, think about whether you’d prefer an electric or manual brush, depending on your preference and budget.
What should I do if I have a dental emergency?
If you have a dental emergency, please don’t hesitate to visit our clinic or call our reception team to schedule an emergency appointment.
Outside of office hours, please call Dalriada Urgent Care for emergency dental services on (028)-2566-3510. This service is available on Saturday/Sunday/Bank Holidays from 8am until noon. Treatment is provided for swelling/trauma/uncontrolled bleeding/severe dental pain. This service is provided at the Emergency Dental Surgery, Ballymena. Normal dental service charges will be payable.
Do I need to see a dentist if I don't have any pain?
Yes, it’s important to see a dentist for regular check-ups even if you’re not experiencing any pain. Regular check-ups can help identify and treat problems before they become more serious. Early detection of gum disease, for example, can prevent the need for more extensive and costly treatment down the road.
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
In general, it’s recommended to have your teeth professionally cleaned every six months, in conjunction with your regular check-up. However, this may vary depending on your oral health and any specific concerns you may have. If you have a history of gum disease, for example, your dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings. Ask your dentist for specific recommendations based on your oral health.
What are the signs of gum disease?
There are several signs that may indicate you have gum disease. These include:
– Gums that are red, swollen, or tender.
– Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss.
– Gums that have pulled away from your teeth.
– Pus between your gums and teeth.
– Persistent bad breath.
– Loose or shifting teeth.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible. Early treatment is key to stopping gum disease from progressing.
Is it normal to be nervous about going to the dentist?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous about going to the dentist. Many people have some level of anxiety about dental visits. The good news is that there are steps you can take to make the experience less stressful.
Let your dentist know about your fears, and they will be able to help you feel more comfortable. At our clinic, we strive to create a calm and welcoming environment for all of our patients.
How can I take care of my teeth between dental visits?
You can take several steps to maintain good oral health between dental visits. First, be sure to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Floss daily to remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth. Limit your intake of sugary foods and drinks, and drink plenty of water to keep your mouth hydrated. Also, don’t forget to visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.
These simple steps can make a big difference in your oral health.
What Our Patients Say
“Yes, the surroundings are quaint & rather old-fashioned (quite comforting, actually!) but the dental care is FANTASTIC! From the super-friendly receptionists to the wonderful dentists – my husband and I are delighted to have joined this practice. Thank you!“
“Like most people, I don’t usually enjoy going to the dentist and I tend to postpone it until it becomes too late! Inevitably I got a severe toothache, and this practice kindly managed to fit me in the next day to alleviate the pain. They then carefully explained exactly what work I needed and also taught me how to properly maintain my teeth. Tony McWhirter, the receptionists and dental staff are all highly skilled, professional and friendly and as a result, I have overcome my lifelong fear of the dentist. Very highly recommended.“
“I have been a patient for over 35 years and cannot speak highly enough of this dental practice. The dentists and their assistants, hygienists and receptionists are all highly qualified, thoroughly professional yet friendly and welcoming, which never fails to puts me at ease. You can rest assured that your dental hygiene and care are in safe hands with Riada Dental Care.”
